Iceland became world famous a few years back when they stated a brave vision for a 100% hydrogen based energy system by 2050. Since 2003 fuel cell busses have been in operation in Reykjavik and a hydrogen filing station was opened the same year. With the establishment of the $3,5 million SMART-H2 demonstration program Iceland takes the next step onwards the 2050 vision. The SMART-H2 program is to support demonstration of fuel cell cars and ships.
In the ship project on Island the H2 Logic fuel cell is to be used as an APU onboard a ship acting as a secondary power supply when the ship is not sailing.
H2 Logic is devoted to commercialize fuel cell systems for transport with main focus on the first and early markets within materials handling vehicles such as forklifts.
For H2 Logic the order to Iceland enables test of fuel cell systems in a very harsh and corrosive environment at sea, but also gives the opportunity to learn more about future market opportunities for fuel cells as APU onboard ships.
For H2 Logic it is also important to have fuel cell systems in operation on Iceland because the island is one of the best global showcases for hydrogen and fuel cell technology and often attracts the attention of the world press.
